The data is in. The United Nation’s Post-2015 Development Agenda, the International Energy Agency’s 2015 report “Tracking Clean Energy Progress 2015,” the World Economic Forum’s “Global Risks 2015” report, the Pope’s Encyclical Letter “Laudato Si’” and even a cadre of the world’s billionaires agree there is an urgent need for action to address climate change, pollution and resource shortages, and that corporations must be key players in addressing these challenges.
However, this will require profound changes in the way business executives and their corporations act. Rather than exploit natural and societal resources for their own competitive and financial advantage, corporate stewards must make responsible use of that which they hold in trust, and leave it in an enhanced condition for future generations. We are in a race against time-one that we must win to ensure planetary and human well-being. Susan Albers Mohrman, Ph.D., is a senior research scientist in the area of organization design and effectiveness and large-scale change at the Center for Effective Organizations in the Marshall School of Business at the University of Southern California. She has served on the Academy of Management Board of Governors, the Board of Directors of the Human Resource Planning Society and on the editorial boards of many academic journals. Mohrman earned a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Stanford University, a Master of Education from the University of Cincinnati and a Ph.D. in Organizational Behavior from Northwestern University.
