Regardless of formal titles, strong skill development in both leadership and followership–say, clear communication and active listening–is what makes teams flexible and resilient. The dynamic flow of leading and following within a group is what defines its collaborative capacity, its ability to get things done together. It also provides an enduring sense of shared purpose, inclusion, and belonging, and enhances problem-solving.

This session shares practical training tips and hands-on activities from Sharna’s book Lead & Follow, to help you understand the followership role more clearly and consider how you might integrate followership skills into existing employee learning and development programs.

Learning Objectives

  1. Articulate what followership is and how it functions in partnership with leadership
  2. Distinguish between an individual’s “rank” and “role” in organizational terms
  3. Apply the partnership framework to the expression of specific strengths and values
